Description
The Great Seal of the United States is etched in granite (the rest of the seal is wrapped around the corner of the granite block) at the Federal Court House on Stewart Street in downtown Seattle.
"E Pluibus Unum", Latin for "Out of many, one", was included in the Great Seal by act of Congress in 1782. It has special meaning for me, it means we're all in this together and together there is nothing we can't do. The sentiment is also included in the Pledge of Allegiance, "...one nation...indivisible".
On my walkabout that day, when I came across the Great Seal, I noticed, at the next corner, the red hand, the international sign for pedestrians to stop and not cross the street. And even though it was a block away, its placement, from a visual perspective, right next to the Great Seal, represented to me that there are forces out there that want to totally undo what it has taken us 246 years to become. America is not perfect, it will never be perfect, but, we can make it better. Not by tearing it apart, but by building on what we have.
In the years since capturing this image (02/28/2010), I am saddened that things have become worse and lament that so many of our fellow citizens fail to take a critical look at the information that is being given to them.
