Description
A tourist looks up in awe at the decorative symmetry of a towering ceiling in the Pantheon of Paris, France. The architecture of the building includes Gothic and Classical elements - an early example of Neoclassicism.
The Pantheon, located in Paris' Latin Quarter and built between 1758 and 1790 by order of King Louis XV of France, was originally intended to be a church dedicated to Saint Genevieve (the patron saint of Paris). It was repurposed in 1791 into a mausoleum for prominent French citizens, some of which include:
Voltaire, a prolific writer, and one of the first to become a commercial success on an international level.
Victor Hugo, who is considered to be one of the greatest French writers. Among his most well-known works are Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Marie Curie, who conducted pioneering research in the field of radioactivity. Her grave is lined with lead because her remains are still radioactive to this day.
The Pantheon's usage flipped back and forth between mausoleum and church a couple of times in the 19th century; these changes resulted in modifications to the decorative elements of the building, including adding a cross or flag to the dome and blocking some of the windows with masonry in order to give it a darker atmosphere.
