Description
Early Cycladic female figurine made of marble. It is of the Plastiras type, named after the cemetery of Plastiras in north Paros, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea.. This figurine dates to the period 3200 - 2800 BC.
The ancient Cycladic culture flourished in the islands of the Aegean Sea from c. 3300 to 1100 BCE. Along with the Minoan civilization and Mycenaean Greece, the Cycladic people are counted among the three major Aegean cultures. Cycladic art therefore comprises one of the three main branches of Aegean art. (Wikipedia)
Several theories of these figurines have been put forward. They could represent: the Great Mother, goddess of fertility; apotropaic figures; nymphs or heroes; revered ancestors; or divine nursemaids. Whatever they are, they represent some of the most beautiful examples of ancient sculpture.
