Last year, on the hottest of summer days, while sitting in the rosemary-scented shadow of my family's Mediterranean garden, I set out to paint a (figurative) Firebird. Like the Phoenix from Greek and other mythologies, the Firebird is a somewhat mystical beast that can burn and rise from its own ashes, thus symbolising rebirth, renewal and uniqueness of the soul, and that appears as a recurring motif in Slavic, and thereby Croatian, folklore and folk-tales. It has fascinated me since I was little.
When I was laying down the underpainting I was surprised to see the oils, witch were heavily diluted with Lefranc's J.G. Vibert medium, running down in unexpected ways. After overcoming some initial ego-resilience ("I know best!" "I'm in charge!"), I started following along and, bit by bit, letting go of my initial intent. It was as if the picture had its own will! It wanted to be turned around, rocked like a newborn baby, and fed with pouring liquids.
At the end of the day (a little before midnight actually) the whole bottle of medium was gone! The Firebird turned out abstract and accomplished as such. I was my first OIL action painting, a great personal discovery which would lead me to a whole new phase later in autumn and winter 2013. Coming soon on FAA...
