Description
A ferel rooster on the island of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. These chickens roam the island freely, and some islanders love and feed them, others hate them for the noise. I found them fascinating, as I am a bird person and a chicken lover. I haven't heard a rooster crow for many years until listening to these beautiful birds.
I guess my love for chickens dates back to my childhood pet chicken! I lived on a farm for nearly two years, and each spring my mother bought a hundred or so baby chickens. My sister and I made a pet of one, a hen-to-be. When it came time for mother to slaughter them, our grief knew no bounds. We had a hard time choking down our Sunday chicken dinner, for fear we were eating our pet.
Lesson learned. Don't make pets out of animals you will eventually eat.
