Description
In Gatineau Park, not far from Canada's Capital city of Ottawa, is found the ruins of the world's first carbide mill. This mill was built by Thomas Leopold “Carbide” Willson who was a pioneer of the North American electrochemical industry, with over 70 patents in his name. Willson discovered that calcium carbide reacted with water to produce acetylene a flammable gas that is used in welding and acetylene itself is a useful starting point for the synthesis of innumerable organic compounds.
