Description
This digital photograph features a sculpture of Chief Justice John Marshall, the founder of judicial review and the American system of constitutional law. Marshall served as an officer in the Continental Army under George Washington and when the war was over, he became a lawyer and a political figure. He was appointed Secretary of State when John Adams became president, and then Marshall became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, even holding both positions at the same time for a while. This sculpture is the copy of one placed on the grounds of the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., created by William Wetmore Story. William was a former lawyer, a talented artist, musician and poet, and also the son of Joseph Story, an associate justice on the Supreme Court and author of Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States. William was asked to design a marble memorial for his father and it changed his life. He gave up his legal career and went to Italy to learn to sculpt. After completing some works in America, he settled in Italy for the remainder of his life. The plaster replica for this second statue was commissioned in the 1920s and a Philadelphia sculptor, Louis Milione, was hired to oversee the casting in bronze. In 1931, it was placed on the granite base and situated at the west entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This image is one in a series of three that I have created.
