Description
At one time there were over 300 trains and roughly 100,00 passengers that came through this Great Hall and saw the Chicago Union Station Sign daily during World War II. 1925 was the year Union Station opened and today is only a portion of its original size. In 1969 the original concourse building between Canal Street and the River was demolished. Construction costs in 1925 were more than $75 million and is equal to $1 Billion in 2015 dollars. As of today, the station handles roughly 56 Amtrak trains daily, 3 million passengers annually, 271 Metra trains daily, and roughly 130,000 daily passengers and is the fourth busiest train station in the United States.
This picture orientation is from the Great Hall looking towards the main ticket area. This is a phenomenal building to bring a camera and to take pictures in. Its neoclassical structure is fitting of a civic monument and is one of the most magnificent interior spaces in Chicago. Although not in this photograph, you should take a look at the stair treads leading up to the street level. You will clearly see where they’ve been worn from all the people who have come through this station over the years. A lot of history in this building and worth the visit.
All proceeds will be donated to Chicago's Cornerstone Community Outreach in honor of photographer Richard Cleis, 1965-2021.
