Description
This is one of those buildings in the Loop that I seem drawn to over and over with my camera. I like the neo-Classical design with its red granite and red Roman bricks. With its five-story base where the first three stories are deeply recessed behind the iconic columns, the play of light and shadow makes for some compelling photographs.
This was one of those photos where I was drawn by the beautiful light glancing off the granite columns. The bicycle tied to the post and the young man carrying his Whole Foods bag over his shoulder just seemed to fit. If you look closely at either end of the building you will also see two bas-relief sculptures of lions guarding the entrance. The lion is a symbol of Harris Bank.
Harris Bank was founded in 1883 by Norman Wait Harris that originally specialized in the marketing of municipal bonds. This building was erected in 1911 and would expand with newer construction on both sides. Eventually, Harris bank would be bought out by the Bank of Montreal. With over $1.3 Billion in revenues and employing nearly 6,000 people in the Chicago area, it is among the largest banks in all of Chicago.
All proceeds will be donated to Chicago's Cornerstone Community Outreach in honor of photographer Richard Cleis, 1965-2021.
