Description
A carpenter bee feeds on a pickerel weed flower in Tampa, Florida's Lettuce Lake Park
The carpenter bee (xylocopa) is found in the eastern United States, south to Texas and northern Florida, and down into Guatemala.
They tend to chew holes at the base of flowers to get at the nectar directly.
They are the same general size as bumblebees, usually black or with just a little yellow and they are shiny looking. They make their nests in the unfinished wood of trees, bushes, or building, by chewing holes in it.
