Description
Moonlight glinting off an evening surf emanates a sense of mystery and peace.
The coast itself is a place of serenity and peace, the gentle sound of the surf hitting the sand, the starlight glinting in reflection off of the water.
By Moonlight, the artwork, invites the viewer to step onto the beach on a calm, moonlit night. The clouds on the horizon bespeak a change of weather that will come in during the night, but for now, the sky overhead is clear, and the glint of the moon’s silver light is just hinted at, at the top of the painting.
This beach could be anywhere, but the particular venue from which By Moonlight is taken is on the beaches of Lincoln City, on the central coast of Oregon in the United States. Here, there are seven miles of beach upon which to walk, and an intrepid walker who is willing to take off their shoes and wade through the many rivers and rivulets that run across the sand, can spend an entire afternoon, or evening, walking from one side of the city to the next.
That’s the best thing about visiting a beach: the walking. With no sound other than the surf and waves to the side, there is much time to think. The eye wanders over the horizon, down the beach, over the waves of the surf, and there is much time and freedom to think, to wonder, to mentally wander as one’s body continues the step by step stroll in the sand.
The beach is the place to put away the phone – in fact, leave it in the hotel room if you have come to the coast for the weekend – and absorb oneself in the sights, in the sounds, in the very real personality of the beautiful beach.
