Description
This picture has a caption reading "The Swannie House / Buffalo, N.Y." This black and white ink sketch is also available in this shop without a caption.
I see this as a sort of companion piece to my picture of Ulrich's Historic Tavern, also in this shop. I love both pubs and I biked over to them and sketched them just days apart in fall 2019. The lovely old Swannie House has presided over the corner of Ohio and Michigan streets in Buffalo, NY, for 120 years. It served workers on the Erie Canal who were celebrating reaching Buffalo, the end of their journey. It was also the main gin mill for the "grain scoopers" who scooped grain at the grain elevators, and it still is a mainstay for the folks who make Cheerios at General Mills, which is just over the bridge from the bar. I sketched our dear old Swannie from the Michigan Street bridge. In the middle of my sketch a voice came out of a bullhorn and told me, “Bicyclist, get off the bridge. The bridge is lifting.” History came alive!
