I did this sketch of Sahlen Field at the request of the legendary Mayor Jimmy Griffin’s daughter, Maureen Griffin Tomczak. Mayor Griffin was the one who saw this ballpark through to completion, opening it as Pilot Field. (Since then it has had other names including Coca-Cola Field, North AmeriCare Park and Dunn Tire Park.) It was an honor to draw the ballpark for the daughter of the man we can thank for it. That is Mayor Griffin’s statue in the pictures and as I sketched him in, I thought about him and about my own father, who had known Griffin from their shared roots in South Buffalo.
