Description
EPSON MFP image of a book cover prototype, called a dummy, that I designed in 1996 as a student project for a course in graphic design. The book is one that I actually had in mind--a collection of poetry I have written through the years, some of it published.
The poem (free verse) on the inside flap, where you see the seagull, is one example. We had walked the length of Pismo's pier, where we saw a young boy and his father. We witnessed an exchange between the two of them that I would not have been able to capture on camera. So I described on a napkin the scene as I remembered it. Very few words were changed as I shaped that written memory into a poem. As I scanned the book cover for a contest on Fine Art America, I found my instructor's notes on the inside. She had given me an A+ and offered a few words of advice. But the best part of the discovery was learning that my poem had brought her to tears. I hope you enjoy it.

Over-Bored
by Connie Steitz Fox
At the farthest point of Pismo's pier
a lad of ten adjusts his rod and reel,
then off he darts--
past pails of silver mackerel, red snapper,
ling cod--dreaming of them all.
"Watch that pole. It will go over!" warns the dad.
Laughs the lad, "No it won't!" Case closed.
Evening silhouettes the pier on a Monet sky and sea.
More beautiful: the courage of one father
choosing not to intervene.
