The Roman Catholic Basilica of Birnau is a true landmark on the west bank of Lake Constance on the southern border of Germany facing Austria and Switzerland. Built in 1746-49 by Austrian architect Peter Thumb in the ornamental Rococo style it boost over seven alters designed by Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer, frescoes by Gottfried Bernhart Goz and served as a Cistercians monastary. The Basilica Birnau is known as a “pilgrimage church” and today also serves as a parish church
