Description
Fort Jefferson in Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida. What began as a lighthouse to guide ships around the reefs of the Florida Keys in 1824/25 became the largest brick masonry structure in the Americas. This unfinished fortress is made of more than 16 million bricks. Originally built to defend the United States, the fort was used as a prison in the 1800's. Names after our 3rd President, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as was named a National Park in 1992.
