Arcadia Round Barn by Debra Martz
The Round Barn in Arcadia has been a center of community activity and curiosity for over a century. William Harrison Odor came to Oklahoma County in 1892. In 1898, with the use of oxen, the ground was cleared for his barn which would be 60 feet in diameter. Burr Oak timbers were soaked in water while green and forced into the curves needed for the walls and roof rafters. It is said the ceiling from the interior is an outstanding sight but with Covid happening, it was closed so I will have to return another time to see that part of the masterpiece.
After completion in 1898, it housed hay, grain, and livestock, but almost from the start, it served as a community center. From time to time for the next 25 years, barn dances also drew crowds and musicians to Arcadia from a wide area.
In 1928 U.S. Highway 66 (the Mother Road) was aligned through Arcadia, Oklahoma and the unique red, round barn quickly became a Route 66 landmark.
By the late 1970s, though only partially standing, it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 1988 the Arcadia Historical Society acquired the property, volunteers repaired the collapsed roof and barn restoration was done using many of the original construction methods.
Today, the barn remains open as an important community resource and popular resting stop for Route 66 travelers and it is open to the public to tour.
