Description
Relief, or relievo rilievo, is a sculptural technique. The term relief is from the Latin verb levo, to raise. To create a sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane. What is actually performed when a relief is cut in from a flat surface of stone or wood is a lowering of the field, leaving the unsculpted parts seemingly raised. The technique involves considerable chiselling away of the background, which is a time-consuming exercise. On the other hand, a relief saves forming the rear of a subject, and is less fragile and more securely fixed than a sculpture in the round, especially one of a standing figure where the ankles are a potential weak point, especially in stone. In other materials such as metal, clay, plaster stucco, ceramics or papier-mache the form can be just added to or raised up from the background, and monumental bronze reliefs are made by casting.
There are different degrees of relief depending on the degree of projection of the sculpted form from the field, for which the Italian appellations are still sometimes used. The full range includes high relief, where more than 50% of the depth is shown and there may be undercut areas, mid-relief (mezzo-rilievo), low-relief (basso-rilievo, or French: bas-relief), and shallow-relief or rilievo schiacciato, where the plane is scarcely more than scratched in order to remove background material.

At 12 shots per roll, that's 1200 images, sometimes it lasted a month or _not_... Didn't print it all, but have always believed, never keep a camera in a case. See everything, shoot everything that moves and does not move. Its practice or experience that brings improvement. Keep learning, at 83, am still learning things.... reading HOW TO E-books, and stuff on the Internet...

Bob, This is great! I haven't seen you do man "Reliefs" or images of a CITY! I like the color the bas relief, and that you stepped out of your comfort zone! Or maybe this is your comfort zone, I just don't know it, or haven't seen it before! Voted and fav'd
Bob and Nadine Johnston replied:
Most everything is in my comfort zone. ;) When you have been into photography since 1936, not much that has not been done... Went through the cycle of photos of cities back in 1942 in Boston. Worked delivering telegrams for Western Union carrying a camera all over the city. Bought my 120 film wholesale for .08 cents a roll, in boxes with a 100 rolls... :)

Bob & Nadine, interesting processing and title combination. I like the focus on modern industry and transportation links, which are characteristic of so many large cities in the U.S. today. voted

Canaan Lake, NY - United States
The use of the cool blue in this one is the perfect color, harmonizing with and emphasizing the title "Anywhere USA:" the blue sky stretches from the top to the dark blue relief that makes the city JUMP! Nicely done! v/f

Have a lot of stuff which has not been seen. Spend so much time administering all the groups, little time left to upload much of it. Have over 30,000 digital files on one drive, and another teri-byte drive that is full. :)
