Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz crystals. Purple quartz, the most prized gem variety of quartz, is named amethyst. Found in a variety of geologic settings, particularly in Brazil and Uruguay, it is usually as crystals lining cavities or voids in volcanic rock, forming geodes like this. An amethyst is said to bring cooling, calming, and inspiring energy by feng shui practitioners, who sometimes use a photo in place of the real thing. The name comes from Greek words "not" and "intoxicate", due to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. Ancient Greeks wore amethyst and carved drinking vessels from it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication. Cheers!
