This little globe-trotter, the “Love Boat” of television fame, is the smallest ship in the Princess Cruise Line. It carries about five hundred passengers, far fewer than a mega-ship. This makes it ideal for getting as close as possible to glaciers and the stunning scenery and topography of Yakutat Bay, Glacier Bay, and Inside Passage.
Here, in September 2015, it is preparing to depart from Whittier, Alaska, USA, on a week-long voyage that will end in Vancouver. Late-afternoon full-frame photograph of the side rear balconies and distinctive sloped rear portion (stern) of the “Pacific Princess.” Sadly the Pacific Princess was taken out of commission in January 2021, having become too expensive to maintain. But what a little globe-trotter she had become in the years after our first cruise. We had hoped for more.
This image has been given a painterly touch to disguise a handful of passengers and one crewmember, who lend a sense of scale. Passengers boarded here at Whitter, located southeast of Anchorage and not far from Valdez on the Gulf of Alaska. We had completed the land portion of our journey, having flown into Fairbanks. From there we traveled by bus and train to Denali and Talkeetna, then Whittier. Now we could rest and relax, and let the ship and its crew do the work. A southbound land-and-sea journey, from Fairbanks to Vancouver, with several days to enjoy Vancouver, is recommended.
No water is seen in this image. The rear third of the ship fills the frame, creating an intimate landscape portrait with a rugged Alaska mountain in the background. For anyone who has cruised on the Pacific Princess or plans to do so, this would make a nice keepsake. A personal note on a greeting card, or your choice of a message custom-printed inside, would be an ideal way to say bon voyage! Indeed it was a bon voyage--trés bon!

My thanks, Terry Cobb, for the prominent feature in your group, Seen But Not Noticed. I can assure you that by the time a passenger makes it to this point, they are so weary that it's quite possible to see a big ship as a big blur and not think to compose a picture. So glad I did, for it became part of a very important life-event. We also did not yet realize that we were about to sail on the original "Love Boat." We learned that later on the cabin video. I was just looking for a small ship that could get close to glaciers, and this proved an excellent choice in every way. So fun! Glad to be able to share it with others.

It definitely does, for I didn't realize when I took this shot that I was capturing the balcony of our assigned stateroom. Now I can see what that thingamajig was that interfered at times when I wanted to get a good shot from the balcony! Live and learn . . .
