Title
Alien Spheres At St. Marks
Artist
Carla Parris
Medium
Photograph - Digital Photograph
Description
These unusual spheres, with an alien look, were photographed at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in Wakulla County, Florida, where they were growing on vegetation on the side of the road to the St. Marks lighthouse.
This unusual shrub is buttonbush, which is a flowering member of the coffee family. Its botanical name is Cephalanthus occidentalis.
Also called button willow and honeybells, this plant is native to the eastern and southern United States. Its distinctive spheres are composed of perfectly round, tight, dense clusters of small fragrant flowers which are covered with round-headed pistils protruding from the center in every direction. The blossoms look like little pincushions or, for those with imagination, something from outer space!
