Description
Step away from the seaside to see a different slice of life in Manarola, in the Cinque Terre region of Italy. This view is at the start of the hiking trail taking you from Manarola through the vineyards up to the hilltop town of Volastra. From here, you can see the colorful houses clinging to the cliffside and lining the ravine on each side of a the main street which consists of a covered-over stream. From this main street, narrow alleys paved with stone rise up to the houses above. In the top center is a very steep hiking path up through the vineyards, over the top of the hill, and down to Riomaggiore on the other side. Along the street, you can see trucks making early morning deliveries and the local mini bus that you can take up to some of the hilltop towns. There are vineyards and vegetable plots. There is laundry galore. I always enjoy making this stop to watch the life of the town as another day starts.
