Description
Milkweed follicles (pods) with the coma and seed.
During World War II, 5,000 tons of the milkweed filaments from the coma were collected for their good insulation qualities. It was used in the United States as a substitute for kapok. Now, milkweed is grown commercially as a hypoallergenic filling for pillows and used to clean up oil spills.
Milkweed is named for its milky sap which contains latex and several other compounds.
The milkweed plant, or Asclepia, produce their seeds in follicles. The seeds are arranged in overlapping rows of white, silky, filament-like hairs known as the coma. The beauty of the milkweed stems from the follicles ripening and splitting open. The seeds then fluff around the pod and are blown by the wind to places unknown.
