Description
Kalo, which is mostly known as Taro throughout the world, is a food staple throughout the Pacific Islands and other areas of the world. Kalo was brought to Hawai'i by the ancient Hawaiians and is known as a 'canoe plant'. The meaning of this is that this food staple plant is one of at least seven that was brought across the vast Pacific when the first Hawaiians came to settle these Islands.
There are two types of kalo that is grown in Hawai'i; one is a type grown in man-made catchment ponds, similar to how rice is grown, and one is dry-land taro, which relies on natural rainfall and irrigation ditches between rows of plants. This image is from a field of dry-land kalo. For both types of kalo, young shoots are planted by hand. For us, young life is normally called 'keiki'. So we would say this is a field of keiki kalo.
On this afternoon, the late afternoon sun lit the leaves to seem as is they carry light from within, illumination the striking lines of veins in each leaf.
