Description
There is a story to go with this one. This was this wonderful view of the Castel Sant' Angelo in Rome from across the river. Except that there was a wall taller than I am along the sidewalk, and the top of the wall wasn't really wide enough to safely stand on. However, there was a bit of a toe hold that I could use to start my climb....and then my wonderful husband held me up with his hands on my butt so that I could get my upper body on the top of the wall to take some pictures! He got some funny looks from passersby, that is for sure! Anyway...ancient Rome allowed no tombs within its walls, not even that of an emporer. So Emperor Hadrian erected this monument for his tomb, build between 130 and 139 CE. The mausoleum was a huge cylinder (210' X 70') topped by a cypress grove and a huge statue of Hadrian himself. Roman emporers were buried here until ~ CE 217. Legend has it that the Archangel Michael appeared above the mausoleum to Pope Gregory the Great. Sheathing his sword, the angel signaled the end of a plague, thus lending the structure its name: Holy Angel.
