Description
The rugged land of Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park, California glimmer in the morning sun.
The viewpoint, noted for its erosional landscape, is part of the Amargosa Range, and is composed of sediments from Furnace Creek Lake. This lake started forming about 9 million years ago, but dried up around 5 million years ago. During the lake's existence, sediments were collecting at the bottom; these consisted of saline muds, gravels from nearby mountains, and ashfalls from the then-active Black Mountain volcanic field. The climate along the lake was dry, but not nearly as dry as the present.
I've been to Death Valley twice - once in 2015, and once in 2019 (when this picture was taken). Sadly, both times I was there only for a day, which isn't nearly enough time to see all the interesting things. I entered from the east both times, which meant that the sites I saw were generally the eastern-most ones - this one, Dante's View, Badwater Basin, Furnace Creek, Stovepipe Wells, the Devil's Golf Course, and the Mesquite Sand Dunes. If you ever plan to visit, I suggest spending at least a couple of days there. More, if you want to do some hiking, but please pay attention to the heat and all the signs warning you to drink enough water. In 2015, I went in July... it was almost 50C.
