Description
UPDATE: This beautiful mural has been destroyed - how sad. It survives in pictures, however, and I hope this picture keeps both the mission of many to save our oceans and the magnificence of the life in those waters in our thoughts.
This is one of many magnificent murals painted in cities across America, Canada, Australia, Japan, France, the world. This image comes from photos I took while visiting Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. It is titled Whaling Wall #42 "East Coast Humpbacks" - Original painting by Wyland. I wish I'd taken more pictures, better pictures, but you can get an idea of the beauty and dramatic impact of Wyland's work. This link will take you to a list of the 100 Whaling Walls and information on each of these masterpieces. They will take your breath away and steal your heart.

We need to be shepherds of our planet; Earth is more fragile than we care to believe, and we do have the ability to make a difference (for better or worse). Our seas are our future, and these murals bring to everyone the beauty of life in the oceans of the world.
Have you heard of the five, major ocean gyres that are capturing oceanic plastic waste and holding it in immense areas, one bigger than the whole of Rhode Island with some estimates up to 8% of the Pacific Ocean? It's true, and very sad.

Through the generous permission of the Wyland Foundation, I can post this image. The foundation describes their mission as follows: "The Wyland Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is dedicated to promoting, protecting, and preserving the world's ocean, waterways, and marine life. The foundation encourages environmental awareness through education programs, public arts projects, and community events."
I am grateful for their permission, for their many beautiful murals given free to the citizens of the world, and even more grateful for the work they do to raise global consciousness about environmental issues. Learn more about the Wyland Foundation's programs, partnerships, and efforts to make a difference in our schools and communities. Please spend a couple minutes browsing their web site; you'll be glad you did:>).

This was a magnificent, huge painting (must have been 40 feet high on the side of the building). What a great heart someone must have to give so much to us.
