Description
You wouldn't think that this little creek would have that much history to it, but it actually does. This part of the creek is in a section of Willow Creek Canyon called the Black Pitch. It runs right next to the road which is very steep, it is often called the "Bone Yard" or "Dead Horse Flats" by the early miners who worked the mines around here.
Coming down this road next to the creek was a little different looking back then than it does today. Although it is very steep today it was a lot more so back when the mines where operating. Rough wagon wheel locks sometimes broke and loaded wagons pushed horses and mules to their death. wrecked wagons and dead animals were burned to clear the way for other wagons coming up or down leaving only ashes and bones. As you can imagine the wintertime was even worse on teamster and their animals.
Looking at this beautiful creek today it is hard to imagine all that went on, but at the same time when you stand in the steep section looking down on Willow Creek and then look back up the road you can almost see the miners with their wagons and teams going up the mountain. Love this area it's rich with history!
This little creek runs through Willow Creek Canyon above Creede, Colorado which you can see on the Bachelor Loop Tour.
