You have to move away from a place to appreciate its wonders! I never visited Watkins Glenn State Park when I lived 30 minutes away. It took nearly five decades and 1500 miles distance to to finally make the time to visit. Watkins Glenn State Park is located at the south tip of Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes area of central New York state. The centerpiece of the park is a 400-foot deep gorge cut by the Glen Creek that was left ‘hanging’ after the last glaciation period that carved the Finger Lakes. Glen Creek flowing into Seneca Lake was left ‘hanging’ by nearly 400’ above the valley floor, providing the impetus for a torrent of water to erode the underlying rock, leaving behind waterfalls and cascades. Within two miles along Gorge Trail, you can walk over, under, and along the park’s 19 waterfalls. Watkins Glenn State Park was opened to the public in 1863 and was privately run as a tourist resort until 1906, when it was purchased by New York State.
