Description
Viva la Independencia is a night shot of the happy, celebratory crowd scene on the plaza in San Miguel de Allende, a UNESCO World Heritage site, on the night of Sept. 15th. Independence Day, Sept. 16th, celebrates the day Miguel Hidalgo is said to have made the cry of independence (El Grito de la Independencia) in the town of Dolores, (it is also known as the cry of Dolores or el Grito de Dolores), Dolores Hidalgo is in the north-central part of the Mexican state of Guanajuato. Hidalgo was one of the nations leaders during the War of Independence in Mexico. The "grito" was the pronunciamiento of the Mexican War of Independence by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Roman Catholic priest. Hidalgo and several criollos planned a revolt against the Spanish colonial government; several plotters were killed. Fearing his arrest, Hidalgo asked his brother Mauricio, Ignacio Allende and Mariano Abasolo to go with other armed men to make the sheriff release the pro-independence inmates on the night of September the 15. They set eighty free.[2] Around 6:00 am on September 16, 1810, Hidalgo ordered church bells to be rung and gathered his congregation. Flanked by Allende and Juan Aldama, he addressed the people in front of his church, encouraging them to revolt against the Spanish regime. Hidalgos army fought against the Spanish soldiers in the fight for independence, but he was captured and executed on July 30, 1811. The Siege of Guanajuato, the first major engagement of the insurgency, occurred 4 days later. Mexico's independence from Spain in the Declaration of Independence of the Mexican Empire was finally declared after 10 years of war, on September 28, 1821. Independence Day brings fireworks, parties (fiestas), food, dance and music on September 15th and 16. Flags, flowers and decorations in the colors of the Mexican flag, red, white and green, are seen in public areas throughout Mexico. Whistles and horns are blown, bands play, parades occur, and "Viva Mexico" or "Viva la independencia" are shouted!Honored by feature in FIne Art America groups: Images That Excite You and The World We See Group 03/24/2016
