Title
Two Daffodils
Artist
Steve Henderson
Medium
Painting - Watercolor On Paper
Description
They’re not a splashy, showy flower, daffodils.
Rather, they’re understated, often tucked away among the foliage and quietly emerging in the early spring. In shades of cream, white, and yellow, they don’t shout at the passerby, but rather, wait for him and her to finish passing by, stop, turn around, and say,
“Is that a DAFFODIL? It’s spring! Daffodils are the harbinger of spring!â€
The artwork, Two Daffodils, celebrates the quiet, persistent intensity of the daffodil. Reposing in a simple glass vase (actually, it’s a glass bottle that used to hold cream), the duo of flowers looks out in their new world, the interior of a home. Perhaps a child picked them, which would account for their short stems since children, for some reason, often discount the importance of stems. (Many a home with young children has flowers floating atop the water in a glass bowl.)
The flower in front stands tall and straight, looking boldly out at the viewer. The one on the left, in that signature daffodil way, droops slightly, as if it is looking down and thinking. They won’t last long in this new home because flowers just don’t, but while they are here they bring a smile into the room, a smile of hope and joy and goodness – the hope and joy and goodness of spring.
If it’s been a while since you’ve read it, or if you’ve never read it at all, find the poem Daffodils, by William Wordsworth, which starts out, “I wandered lonely as a cloud,†and ends, “ . . . my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.â€
The poet captured well that feeling of coming upon a meadow of these softly waving, elegant yet decidedly country dwellers of the field.
They’re not splashy; they’re humble. And in that humility, that simplicity, there is great beauty.
