Description
An old tree stands at the edge of a small pond in High Park in Toronto (Etobicoke), Ontario during the late afternoon sun.
The second-largest municipal park in Toronto, High Park was opened to the public in 1876, based on a bequest of land from John George Howard, Toronto's first professional architect. In 1873, Mr. Howard deeded 120 acres of his property to the City of Toronto in exchange for a yearly pension of $1200, with the stipulation that the land must always be used as a public park; the remaining 45 acres as well as Colburne Lodge became city property after his death.
Today, the park is a large oasis offering tranquility to residents of the large, bustling city. It includes numerous points of interest: the historic Colburne Lodge, landscaped gardens, Japanese cherry trees (the first, planted in 1959, being a gift from Tokyo), a cafe, a nature centre, children's playgrounds, a sports centre, and a small zoo. In the summer, there are free productions of Shakespeare plays, collectively known as "Shakespeare in the Park".
