Description
This sturdy Live Oak tree is estimated to be around 300 years old. Found along the hiking trail in the Hoop Pole Creek Nature Preserve, it is a popular sight for both residents and tourists. Know by some locals as the Portrait Tree, it is a popular prop for photos of chidren and adventureous adults sitting on the low slung branches.
Owned by the North Carolina Coastal Federation, this small patch of a natural maritime forest represents the woodlands that once occupied much of the barrier islands found of the Southeaster coast of United States. The trail leads through the woods to an estuarine area.
The nature reserve where this old oak grows is located in the beach town of Atlantic Beach. Sometimes referred to as the community's "Central Park," this natural area occupies 39 acres in the center of town. Beyond the mud, water and grasses of the marsh visitors can see the man made structures that surround this natural environment in the distance.
While many come to the Crystal Coast for its lovely beachs and excellent fishing and world famous wreck diving, natural areas like Hoop Hole Creek in Atlantic Beach, the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Area at Pine Knoll Shores and Emerald Isle Woods in Emarald Isle are some of the crown jewels of the area.
