Description
Presque Isle Lighthouse is located on the north shore of Presque Isle State Park at Lighthouse Beach and is the second oldest lighthouse on Lake Erie’s shore. Completed in 1873, the brick tower with attached dwelling was home to nine U.S. Lighthouse Service keepers and their families until 1944. During the shipping season, the keeper climbed to the top of the tower 3 to 4 times each night with fuel to put in the lamp. The light beam from a single burning oil lamp was reflected through the fourth order Fresnel lens and was visible some thirteen nautical miles out into the lake. Two red flashes followed by four white flashes let the mariners know they were near the port of Erie. Now the light is automated. Climbing the 78 steps in the tower provides a nice view of Lake Erie.
