"Bring out your dead" was cried out by the hardy souls who collected the bodies during the time of the Black Plague. They let people know that the cart for deceased plague victims was passing by. Any household that had someone who recently died of the plague would literally "bring out their dead" and throw the person on top of the pile on the cart.
