Why are old graveyards so fascinating! This one in Ellsworth, Maine, USA was even more so because it was so well kept. Many of the graves here dated from the mid 19th century. Although this picture shows some gravestones that have fallen over, there seemed to be a continual effort to maintain and beautify this cemetery. It has two lovely entranceways with signs that say The Old Burial Ground. All the graves of veterans of all wars including the Civil War have a special medallion on them. I visited here early one morning before many people in the town were stirring so the peace and quiet only added to a hushed sense of reverence that you get in a cemetery.
