The Evening Ahead
Painting - Oil On Panel
Life is filled with many day to day tasks and activities, some of which are pleasurable, some of which are not. Too easily, we can fall into the trap of living a life of habits, moving from one task to the next without thinking about anything but “getting stuff done.”
The Evening Ahead reminds us that life has many pleasurable moments – a special evening out, a vacation, a wedding, an anniversary, an elegant event for which we need to dress up – and part of that pleasure is the anticipation as we prepare. Rather than rush through this, as we are tempted to do by a lifestyle that consists of “getting stuff done,” we slow down and live the moment, thinking good thoughts of anticipation, joy, and happiness.
The Evening Ahead invites us into the boudoir of a beautiful woman. As with any representational painting, this invitation encourages the viewer to put themselves in the venue of the image – we are the beautiful woman, we are the person preparing for this special evening, we are slowing down and running our hands through our hair, getting it into just the right arrangement to go with the dress, the jewelry, the makeup.
In line with the idea of slowing down, the colors of The Evening Ahead are soft, gentle, romantic, and flowing from one to the other. The brushwork is impressionistic, with a gentle abstract background that blends and coalesces with the strong visual representation of the woman’s figure. Flowers in the foreground are both representational and abstract, adding a dimension of color and form that draws the viewer’s eye further into the painting.
Anticipation of a pleasurable event is a beautiful thing, and The Evening Ahead allows this anticipation to be a part of our lives before, during, and after the event.
