Description
Originally built by the Detroit Bridge Co, the Cleveland Arcade opened on Memorial Day 1890. The Arcade, also called Cleveland’s Crystal Palace, was the first large-scale indoor shopping mall in America. In 1975, the Old Arcade became the first building in Cleveland to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Arcade currently has shops on the lower levels, with the upper floors converted for use by the Hyatt Regency Cleveland hotel.
The building is a Victorian-era structure of two 9-story office buildings facing Euclid and Superior avenues, joined by a five-story arcade with a glass skylight spanning over 300 feet along the four balconies and 100 feet high. There are 1,800 panes of glass.
In 2001, the Hyatt corporation redeveloped the Arcade into a Hyatt Regency hotel. The Hyatt Regency occupies the two towers and the top three floors of the atrium area. The two lower floors of the atrium area remain open to the public with retail merchants and a food court.
