Description
This Zinnia is growing up tall and in full bloom with the afternoon sun shining directly on it. I was just passing by and saw the yellow Swallowtail butterfly spending time on the flower. I love these butterflies! The dark background of the shady trees makes the sunlit flower and butterfly really highlighted.
The Yellow Swallowtail Butterfly is a favorite large butterfly (Papilionidae) of most people because of its brilliant colors. There are 600 species in the world but about 30 are in the United States -this one is in north Texas. Most have tails at their hind wings such as this one. They resemble a swallowtail bird and that is why they are named such. They feed on flowers and they do sip minerals and salts from mud or damp sand.
Zinnias come in many colors and shapes and are easy to grow starting in late Spring through Summer. It is said that zinnias symbolize thoughts of friends who are not close by.
