Description
SUCCULENT-THE CORE On one of our visits to the well know Longwood Gardens, in Kennett Square, Pa., I took this picture in the Cacti Room, one of my favorite sections in the conservatory. I decided to do a black and white version because of the detail and shadowing on the strong, fleshy leaves of this Agave plant. There are many species of Agave, but the most popular is the Agave tequilana, or Agave azul (blue agave) which is used to make tequila. Another popular species is Agave Americana, or commonly known as the century plant which is pictured here.
The leaves, flowers, stalk, and sap of the agave plant, which are all edible, make this a great source of food. The fiber of some species can be used to make rope. So, not only beautiful to look at, the agave has proven to be very resourceful plant for ancient and current cultures.
