I have always been intrigued by lighthouses and their historically significant role in saving lives by preventing shipwrecks. Because their importance increased when visibility was poor, at night and during storms, I chose to depict this lighthouse as dusk is falling and clouds begin to gather, heralding a storm. The lighthouse staunchly stands ready to play it's life saving role in the drama to come.

Once widely used, the number of operational lighthouses has declined due to the expense of maintenance and replacement by modern electronic navigational systems. This only increases their appeal for me as a symbol of bygone and simpler times.

I chose blues and grays to create a brooding feeling of building drama, and I made the lighthouse the focal point by giving its light the only splash of contrasting gold and white.
