Description
Shores of Yellowstone lake with 110 miles (180 km) of shoreline. Waves at an orange sunset appears warm, but really cold waters are natural. While the average depth of the lake is 139 ft (42 m), its greatest depth is at least 390 ft (120 m). Yellowstone Lake is the largest freshwater lake above 7,000 ft (2,100 m) in North America. The earliest intact archaeological deposits in Yellowstone have been found on the shore of Yellowstone Lake. The site revealed evidence of 9,350-year-old camp where several families appear to have spent time seasonally at the lake. Yellowstone Lake is the home to the largest population of cutthroat trout in North America. The ice cover on Yellowstone Lake normally does not break up until late May or early June. The water temperature even in the summer, is typically 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit.Bears are frequent visitors along the lake and its 100+tributaries.
