Description
Most interesting creature to read about , beautiful as well, and spiky ! I found this on Bear Island in Sydney, Australia , perhaps left behind by fishermen.
Sea urchins are an ancient organism without organs such as a heart or blood vessels. They consist of a mouth, gut tube, a primitive nervous system and five delicate tongues of gonads encased in a spiky hard shell, which is the consumable part commonly known as sea urchin roe or uni. The gonads perform dual reproductive and nutrient storage functions.
The echinoderms (Greek for spiny skin) include sea stars, sea urchins, feather stars, brittle stars and sea cucumbers. All are found in the marine environment in a range of habitats from intertidal surf beaches to the deepest oceans.
The fossil record of sea urchins dates back to the late Ordovician period, 450 million years ago.
Worldwide, there are currently around 1300 species of sea urchin known to science, of which 330 exist in Australian waters.
And the most interesting: an international science team has found that humans share 7,077 genes with urchins. This makes the spiny, spineless creature a closer genetic cousin to man than the fruit fly or worm, more widely studied model organisms. Results from the sequencing project are published in a special six-article section of Science.
