Rare Kokio Kea Hibiscus

Description
This dazzling hibiscus is the rare Hawaiian Koki'o Kea (Hibiscus waimeae subsp. hannerae). Native to Kauai, this tiny hibiscus is one of the few that is fragrant. The flowers are tiny - typically only a few inches across. Characteristic of native Hawaiian hibiscus, stamens are longer than cultivated species. As with most hibiscus, the flowers only last a single day. As with some other native hawaiian hibiscus species, the flowers change color during their single day of bloom, this one starting brilliant white and slowly turning pink. This endangered hibiscus was found growing on the precipitously sheer cliffs of Waimea Canyon on the Island of Kauai (hence the species nomenclature). It has been cultivated in local gardens to help sustain this gorgeous species.
