Title
Pu'u Lilinoe Mauna Kea
Artist
Heidi Fickinger
Medium
Photograph - Photographic Print
Description
This is Pu'u Lilinoe, a cinder cone on the flank of Mauna Kea. Late afternoon lignt and the shadow of Pu'u Haukea bend around the pu'u, over a sea of evening clouds that have flooded the saddle between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa far below.
Lilinoe is the Hawaiian goddess of the mists and younger sister of the more famous Poli’ahu, the goddess of snow. Because the base of this Pu'u is at approximately 12,400 feet, its base is often clothed in misty fogs from the more moisture laden air that comes up from the sea.
