Description
Point Betsie Lightis located on the northeast shore ofLake Michigan at the southern entrance to theManitou Passage north ofFrankfort, Michigan. The cylindrical tower is 39 feet tall, but sits on a dune placing the light 52.5 about the lake. The tower is attached to theLighthouse keepershouse. This was one of the earliest Life Saving Station, and was run under the auspices of theU.S. Life-Saving Service. In 1910 theUnited States Lighthouse Boardwas reconstituted as theU.S. Lighthouse Service and in 1939 these agencies were merged under the control of theU.S. Coast Guard. Prior to being automated in 1983, Point Betsie was the last manned lighthouse on Lake Michigan and the last Michigan lighthouse to lose its keeper.
