Culture shock... If you find yourself thinking, "That's Wong! How rude! They are trying to embarrass me!" you are probably struggling with clashing values between cultures. Take a moment to consider the deeply seeded values that your culture has engrained into your soul and consider the truth that is different for you than the people you are visiting. Fore example, when I first arrived in Indonesia people would mix up my rice and veggies with their fingers and my whole body broke out into a cold sweat. I felt like I would surely die though my mind was doing it's best to stay calm. No one was trying to be rude to me. I KNEW that. But my culture screams, "DIRTY HANDS!" And visions of my grandmother slapping my wrists for touching the food come to mind. We must calm ourselves and acknowledge that there is no "right" way. The facts we believe are truth regarding health can even be questioned. After all, people are alive and well in countries where they touch each other's food...
