"Pelican Riding the Surf" by Patti Deters. At Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, Florida, a lone Brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is seen off the coast in the Atlantic Ocean, sitting in the breaking surf, evoking a sense of isolation and the unexpected. Generally these large water birds like to fly low above the surf, but this one must have found some small fish that were easy to hunt. The sky is a wash of golden hues, giving a dreamlike quality to the scene. Motion blur has been selectively applied for artistic effect.
