Ostia Antica Near Rome Italy

Description
This is the main drag of Ostia Antica, an ancient Roman town just a short train ride from Rome Italy. Along this path and throughout the excavation, you can identify a tavern, apartments, a theatre, warehouses, baths, and shopping arcades. It had all the services a town of the time could require. Ostia, at the mouth (ostium) of the Tiber River, was founded around 620 BCE; its central attraction was the salt gleaned from nearby salt flats, which served as a precious meat preserver. Later, around 400 BCE, Rome conquered Ostia and made it a naval base, complete with a fort. By CE. 150, when Rome controlled all the Mediterranean, Ostia served as its busy commercial port. With the fall of Rome, the port was abandoned, the harbor silted up and Ostia finally abandoned in the 9th century.
