Description

Artistic watercolor photograph of a mature fruit tree orchard near Independence, Washington County, Texas, not far from Brenham. This orchard, so beautiful and serene in the dappled light of late afternoon, may have been part of the large agricultural enterprise run by Texas pioneer Robert Stark Armistead and his wife, Ann, who married in 1826 and came to Texas in 1835. The Armisteads settled here in Independence, and Mr. Armistead became a charter trustee of Baylor University in 1845, only ten years after their arrival.

Peaceful scene of trees only, and no sky, fills the entire frame with the fresh leaves of springtime. The darkness of the limbs and tree-trunks, planted on diagonal lines on natural green grassland, adds contrast, interest, and natural beauty. I love the allure of orchards, for one set of grandparents raised peaches and plums in California.

A portion of a gravel road road runs along the entire lower edge of this image, photographed in color in April 2014, rendered as a watercolor, and cropped to the equivalent of a 16x9. Discretely signed by the artist.
